HNC Electrical Engineering

This course is designed to enable engineers to develop their skills and competence to a higher level in the electrical engineering sector. The course is suitable for those already working in the Engineering industry who are looking to progress towards professional Engineering status offering automatic progression onto the HND Electrical Engineering award as well as leading to various university part time degree programmes.

Applications are invited from candidates who are undertaking a Modern Apprenticeship or as part of their Professional Development.  

Course content

Throughout the duration of the course you will undertake SQA HN Units which will lead to the HNC Electrical Engineering Award (G7TA 15); a sample of the types of the units that you will undertake are given below:
· Electrical Machine Principles
· Applications of Programmable Logic Controllers
· DC and AC Principles
· Application of Electrical and Electronic Instruments
· Three Phase Systems
· Electricity Power Systems
· Electrical Safety
· Electrical Networks and Resonance
· Engineering Mathematics 1
· Communication
· Electrical Engineering Graded Unit 1 Examination 

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • Minimum of two Highers from English, Mathematics, Physics or another technical or science subject
  • A National Certificate in an appropriate discipline
  • Applications are also invited from those without formal qualifications, but who have relevant life and/or work experience. 

Progression routes

Candidates who successful complete the HNC Electrical Engineering Award with a Graded Unit 1 result of B or above will be able to progress to the HND Electrical Engineering programme at the Anniesland Campus of Glasgow Clyde College.

There may also be opportunities to apply for part-time Engineering degree programmes at various universities including: 

  • Glasgow Caledonian University
  • Napier University
  • University of the West of Scotland
  • The Open University
