City and Guilds Pre-Apprentice Construction - Level 1 (January 2018)

This course is aimed at students looking to enter the construction industry.  The subjects will prepare you for a range of trades within the industry, with health and safety, team-working and employability skills at the core of the course.

Course content

  • Carpentry and joinery
  • Wet trades
  • CSCS preparation and testing 

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • This course has no formal entry requirements.  However, applicants will be interviewed and given a short practical test to determine suitability for the course.
  • Applications are also invited from those without formal qualifications but have relevant life and/or work experience.

Selection process

Progression routes

  • After successfully completing the course and having received a satisfactory reference from your lecturers you will be accepted for the National progression Award in Construction at level 5.
  • Successfully completing the course will place you in a better position to find employment.  Each of the industries have a selection test that must be achieved before progressing onto possible employment within the industries listed below
  • Carpentry and joinery apprenticeship supported by CITB
  • Plumbing apprenticeship supported by SNIPEF
  • Electrical apprenticeship supported by SECTT

For courses starting in August 2017, you can make up to two applications.

Applications are made to a course and a first choice of campus. If the course is oversubscribed at your first choice you will be automatically considered for alternative sites and may be made an offer without a further application.
