Theory & Musicianship

This course proves that Music theory can be fun! It is suitable for children who are already learning a musical instrument as well as those without any previous knowledge. The children will start to work towards and complete the Associated Board Grade 1 Theory Exam. Musical Theory knowledge is essential for any child wanting to learn an instrument, so this class is the perfect complement to instrumental tuition.

The following concepts will be taught in a fun way using games and percussion:

  • recognition of notes on the stave
  • rhythm practice
  • knowledge of scales and keys
  • intervals
  • knowledge of different musical concepts and performance directions, including tempo and dynamics.

It is recommended that children learning an instrument are encouraged to participate in a musicianship and theory class. Not only will it increase and further develop a child’s musicality, but it will arm the child with essential musicianship skills and promote musical knowledge. It also aims to complement and accelerate the learning of an instrument. The primary concern is the development of the whole child into a complete musician.

Each week the course will cover the following:

  • Musicianship and theory activities based on Grade 1 ABRSM Theory
  • Listening activity
  • Ukulele tuition and/or introduction to guitar/piano

All instruments are provided for use in the classes, however children are encouraged to obtain their own ukuleles to practise at home.

Please note: Your child will be required to buy and bring along a Grade 1 theory book for this class.
