Journalism for Beginners

 Course Content

  • The role of a journalist – the importance of sources, the contacts book and how to find a story.
  • Interview skills – how to track down the right person to interview and how to become a confident interviewer.
  • The newsroom – learning how the newsroom works, editorial structure and copy flow.
  • How to write a feature -  this will include researching, carrying out interviews and story structure.
  • How to write a news story – the basic structure of a news story.
  • Online and social media- the basics of online reporting, the importance of social media and blogging.

The students would be given as much real life experience as possible and would have the opportunity to produce their own feature articles and receive feedback from industry professionals.

The course will allow those with a passion for journalism to learn the trade from highly experienced professionals.
The course will be delivered by industry experts allowing the students to benefit from their wealth of experience and their contacts within the industry.
Students will have access to real life materials such as interview transcripts and news schedules and will be encouraged to write their own stories.
The students could create their own blog/website within the college to showcase their work.
Any student with a high quality of work will be encouraged to pitch their feature to newspapers or magazines or to apply for work experience placements.
